1. What’s happening
The Aquarium Of The World is under threat from fossil fuels
The Gulf of California, home to more than 12,000 species, has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. However, plans are underway in this region for natural gas liquefaction terminals, new gas pipelines, and massive LNG carriers. What happens here affects us all.
At least four large-scale projects—Saguaro Energía and AMIGO LNG, as well as the Sierra Madre and Corredor Norte gas pipelines—pose a threat to the communities and species of the Gulf of California. Air, water, and soil pollution caused by the fossil fuel industry would harm the region’s ecosystems.
2. Who we are
We are all part of the Gulf of California
We are residents of the Gulf of California region, calling on the world for help and speaking out to prevent the devastation of one of the planet’s most valuable ecosystems.
Defensa Ambiental del Noroeste and our partner organizations work alongside communities in the Gulf of California: fishermen, scientists, students, hoteliers, activists, and citizens. We represent a conversation that is already taking place in the region. The Gulf is sustenance. It is knowledge. It is the economy. It is global heritage. We have taken this conversation to international forums such as the UN and UNESCO. Now we are taking it everywhere. Join those who are putting the “World’s Aquarium” at the center of the global conversation.
3. What we do
A Campaign on All Fronts
We are defending the Gulf of California through legal and diplomatic channels, as well as through community and international outreach. This is a global effort to raise awareness of a problem causing irreversible devastation. Don’t leave us alone.
Campaña Global: Save The Golf of California. International Alerts to the UN, UNESCO, the Ramsar Convention, and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. Legal Strategy: A dozen lawsuits are currently underway. Science Outreach: The book Mexico at the Gas Crossroads by Aleida Azamar. Digital Activism: Petitions on Change.org.
4. What can you do
Join the action
Given the imbalance in resources, your action makes all the difference. If you join us, we can curb the greed of the fossil fuel industry. There are many ways to help—find out how. Every little bit counts. The World Aquarium needs you. Choose how to take action.
